[chenowethsite.com] John was the third son and fourth child of Arthur and Saphira Hooker Chenoweth. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 01, 1745 and married, at the age of 20, Hannah Cromwell in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She was the daughter of William Cromwell and Constant Wilmot. Hannah's sister, Patience, married John's brother, Samuel Chenoweth. John served in the Revolutionary War. In 1768, John's occupation was listed as a planter. In 1770 John received land from his father, where he and Hannah settled. He and Hannah had all their children in Maryland. In 1786, they sold this land and may have moved then to Virginia. They are not found in the 1790 Census of Maryland. Richard Harris states that about 1793, they moved near Darkesville, Berkeley County, Virginia. Records indicate, from his holdings and will, that John and Hannah, possibly in part from her family, amassed a considerable wealth. Near Darkesville, John built a substantial stone house, which he called Rock Hall, importing materials for this construction from England. This home is still standing. Hannah died here in 1803 at the age of 61; and John lived another 17 years, dying at about 75 years of age. John is buried in the Rock Hill cemetery at his homestead, near Darkesville, VA (now WV). John made his will in 1814 and it was proven on September 11, 1820.
