Bryce Eldean DeJarnette of Waverly died Friday, October 10, 2014. He was 94.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Waverly United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Waverly Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home of Burlington has the arrangements.

Bryce Eldean DeJarnette was born June 22, 1920, at Waverly, Nebraska, to Millard F. and Nora Adella Wood DeJarnette.

His parents moved to a farm Southwest of Waverly, Kansas, when he was one year old. He went to Prairie View Grade School and Waverly High School, graduating in 1936 at the age of 16. He worked in Riverside, California, the summer of 1941. He joined the Army Air Corp on March 1, 1942. He had three months mechanics schooling at Kansas City, Missouri. He then was sent to Morrison Field at West Palm Beach, Florida. He married Margaret Harris, on October 11, 1942, at her parents’ home in Waverly. They made their home in West Palm Beach. He was stationed in British Guiana from November of 1944 until October of 1945. He was discharged on December 3, 1945. He and Margaret bought a home in Hall Summit, Kansas, in January of 1946. Bryce owned and operated a Shop and Garage from 1946 till 1965. He joined the Hall Summit United Methodist Church on November 17, 1957, later transferring to the Waverly United Methodist Church. He taught Auto Mechanics for 2 years at Vo-Tech in Emporia, starting in September of 1965, and taught Machine Shop for 18 years there. He retired in July of 1985. He had served on the Waverly School Board for 7 years, taught youth and adult Sunday School, was Chairman of the Administrative Board and the Pastor Parish Relations Committee for the Waverly United Methodist Church. He was also a Community Leader for the Tip Top 4-H Club. During retirement, Bryce and Margaret enjoyed travelling in their camper all over the U.S. to see the country and visit friends and relatives. Bryce continued to work in his shop until after his 90th birthday. He especially enjoyed making wood items for his family and helping collectors to restore old John Deere tractors. He was very pleased to be invited to join an Honor Flight and visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. and to be honored by the American Legion for 60 years of membership.

Bryce died Friday, October 10, 2014, at Leawood, Kansas.

Bryce & Margaret enjoyed 62 years of marriage before she preceded him in death in 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Melissa, and 7 brothers and sisters.

Bryce is survived by his two daughters, Peggy I. Johnson and her husband David, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Nancy S. Barr, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a son, Dale L. DeJarnette and his wife Roxanne, Pomona, Kansas, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 17, 2014, at the Waverly United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM, on Thursday at the Church. Contributions may be made to the Waverly United Methodist Church, and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
