Carl Simpson Norwood

Carl Simpson Norwood, longtime resident of Rule, Texas, passed away Saturday evening, October 11, 2014, at his home. Mr. Norwood was 94. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Rule with Rev. Dale Turner officiating. Interment will take place at Frenship Cemetery in the Hefner Community north of Goree, Texas, under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. A visitation is planned for 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday evening, October 14, at the funeral home located at 600 Robins Ave in Rule.

One of 12 children Carl Norwood was born in Knox County, Texas, on September 28, 1920, to Celeste Jane (Deatherage) and James Elmer Norwood. He married Annie Zeola Kirkpatrick in Munday, Texas, on October 5, 1940. Mrs. Norwood preceded him in death in 2008.

Carl served in the United States Army during WWII. He was honorably discharged on August 12, 1946, and he Zeola continued to live in the area where Carl was a pumper with Texland Petroleum Over the years, Carl enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball and the Pony League. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Rule.

In addition to his wife, Zeola, Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Celeste and James Norwood; 6 brothers, Sammie Norwood, Earl Norwood, Elmer Norwood, Roy Norwood, Alvin “A.B.” Norwood and Joe Bob Norwood; and 1 sister, Leona “Sis” Norwood Jones.

Carl is survived by his 2 sons, Carl Lyndel Norwood and wife Betty of Dickinson, Texas, and Rickey Lynn Norwood and wife Karen of Port Lavaca, Texas; 1 daughter, Debra Kay Kennedy and husband Rick of Haskell; 7 grandchildren, David Norwood of College Station, Jeffrey Norwood of Belton, Robin Clymer of Liberty, Melody Kennedy of Port Lavaca, Scott Kennedy of Haskell, Chad Norwood of Webster, and Eric Norwood of Port Lavaca. In addition, he is also survived by his 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Norwood of Graham; and 4 sisters, Irene Sanderson of Newark, Neoma Henderson of Burleson, Lillie Etta Webb of Bennington, OK, and Lois Riggs of Monroe, OK.

Serving as pallbearers for Carl are his 7 grandchildren.

If desired, the family request that donation be made in Carl’s name to the Frenship Cemetery Association in Goree.
