Mr. Newton was a Veteran of the US Army, having served in Europe during WWII. He was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church, as well as the Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge AFM #402. Mr. Newton retired in 1983 after 24 years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. In retirement, he enjoyed working in his yard and meeting his friends for coffee each morning at the old St. Andrews Pharmacy, and later at the Lizard’s Thicket.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Mary Cleo Givens Newton; daughters, Judy Hall of Chapin and Barbara Newton of Columbia; sisters, Lillian Lever of Rincon, GA, Lucille Zeigler and Ann Todd both of Savannah, GA, and Doris Rucker of Guyton, GA; and granddaughter, Melissa Hall of Lexington, SC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newton was preceded in death by five brothers.
