He was the son of Albert and Frances (Soberano) Lancaster. On the 1900 census he is only 3 months old and a name is not given for him. On the 1910 and 1920 census returns it is difficult to read his name -- perhaps Apermenio or Apemiguio. So, Joe seems to be his nickname. It is the name given when he registered for the draft in 1918. At that time he was a student at the Sherman Institute in Riverside, a school attended on a boarding basis by San Diego Indians.
