Enlisted in the Union army at the age of 21, mustering in at Camp Butler, as a Private in the 114th Illinosi regiment. Participated in engagements at Raymond, Guntown, and Jackson, Miss., and at the siege of Vicksburg. Discharged as a Cpl on Aug. 3, 1865.
Survived by daughters Caroline Saunders, Mrs. Sophie Brown, sons William, Frank, Louis and Joseph, 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
