Gertje Schakel, daughter of John and Adrianna Schakel was born November 24, 1848 near Pella, Iowa and died in Prairie City November 6, 1921 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. A. Vos.

One of a family of eleven children of three who survive - John Schakel of Loveland, Colorado, Mrs. M. B. Johnson also of Loveland and D. R. Schakel of Prairie City.

Married John Nearmyer on November 13, 1866. Fourteen children, eleven survive. Two died in infancy and one son, Jacob, died April 27, 1917.

Surviving are - John and Samuel of Monroe, Iowa; Mrs. Grant Jennings, Mrs. B. A. Vos, Mrs. John DeWitt all of Prairie City; Henry of Des Moines; Mrs. Peter Klein and Mrs. Henry Van Rees of Pella; Dirk of Parsons, Kansas, Mrs. W. H. Gates of Jewel City, Kansas and Mrs. Cora Kirkwood of Knoxville, Iowa.

In 1884 she and her husband moved on a farm southeast of Monroe. Her husband died September 24, 1906. She then moved to Pella.
On January 15, 1914 she married Gerritt Vande Kamp.
She was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Pella, Iowa.
Her husband Gerritt Vande Kamp died November 26, 1919.
