James Lisbon Lawlis was the son of John Lawlis and Elizabeth (Fleming) Lawlis. He was married to Minnie Geneva (Rosser) Lawlis.

Rev. Lawlis was the founder and first President of Westminster College, first located in Westminster, Texas and then moved to Tehuacana, Texas. James Lawlis was said to be the "Prince of Men" by his congregaton. Westminster was a College for Methodist Ministers and in September of 1902, the new building in Tehuacana was ready to move into and Rev. Lawlis had committed to some Revival work so he didn't arrive at the new building until October. He preached one Sunday at the new location and then became tired and ill from the summers work and had to take to his bed. The physician soon pronounced the malady as typhoid fever. In a few weeks he died and the whole community mourned his departure and their hopes for the new University. Professor C.O. Stubbs took over and the University prospered in Tehuacana. In 1972 Westminster College was renamed Wesley College and moved to Florence Mississippi.

James left his wife Elizabeth and two young children behind. His children were: James Lisbon Lawlis Jr. who was born in 1897 and died in 1959. James Lisbon Jr. is buried in Resthaven Cemetery in Brady, Texas, and Victoria (Ferguson) Lawlis.

James Lisbon Lawlis had brothers Jerome B., Orlando Bruce, Leven Columbus, and Cyrus William, and sisters, Clarissa, Malissa, Lydia Cornelia, Mary Ann, and Victoria Adonia Lawlis.
