A GOOD MAN PASSES TO HIS REWARD

Just as the sun was sinking to rest in the western sky, and just as he was completing the last hours of his 82d year, Jacob Fisher passed quietly and peacefully out from the scenes of this world and into the realms of the spirit land. His death had been expected for some time, but his wonderful constitution resisted the attack of disease to the last. He died at his home in Oneida at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4, 1896, aged 82 years.

Jacob Fisher was born at West Newton, Westmoreland County, Penn..Oct 5, 1814. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of 22. In 1838 he was united in marriage to Miss Louisiana Gardner. He lived in Westmoreland County until 1855 (?33), when with his family he came to Illinois, making the journey by water as far as Copperas Creek lock. He settled on the farm now owned by A. J. Timmons, which was then known as “the fort.” By profession he was a carpenter and from youth up to some ten years after coming to Illinois he followed that occupation, working large of men under him often having ten or twelve apprentices steadily at work. From the age of about 51 years he gave up this business and gave his entire attention to his farm. He was the father of eleven children, seven of whom are now living. These seven are: C. P., of Oklahoma; J. W. , of Citronelle, Ala; D.M. of this place; F.M. of Rapatee (?); H.C. of Macomb; Mrs. Lizzie Fullmer of Bardolph; and Mrs. Kate Barlow of Canton. Two of the other four died in infancy. Wm. L (a twin to Frank) died about twenty-seven years ago at the age of nineteen; and E.J. died at Harper, Kansas, about two years ago. :Mr. Fisher’s wife and the mother of his children died May 3, 1887. He was married again in 1890 to Mrs. Ellis of Oneida. She died about two years ago. Since his second marriage he has lived at Oneida, and his wife being a member of the Congregational Church he also united with that church. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church here at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6th, Rev. Lowther officiating. Although the notice of his death was very sudden the attendance at the funeral was very large. The remains were laid in their final resting place in the cemetery at Midway near where he spent so many years of his life.

Among other relatives Mr. Fisher leaves three sisters, Aunt Sara Wilson, who kept house for him. Mary Ann Fisher and Mrs. Hettie Blackburn, the latter two of Westmoreland County, Penn. All of his living children and Aunt Sarah Wilson were at the funeral.

Mr. Fisher was a man of the most sterling worth and integrity. An earnest Christian all his life, a true friend and neighbor. Truly a good man has gone to his reward, and while we mourn his departure, we rejoice in the example he has set before us. A long life full of usefulness and righteousness. What more of honor could be given man?

The children and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in this sad hour of parting.
