John was the son of Richard Ould and Elizabeth Truscott Ould. He immigrated to America as a young man. He married first to Susan Marie Shepard on 5 February 1856 at Wampsville, New York. They had three children before she died in 1882. John married next to Amelia Bundy Lovejoy on 15 September 1886 at Oswego, New York. They had no children together and she died in 1891. John married last to Julia Bennett on 4 June 1896 at Durhamville, New York. They had no children together. John was a tailor, having learned the trade in England, all of his life. In America, he lived first at Wampsville; then at Syracuse, New York; and finally at Oswego. At Oswego, he was first a partner, and later sole proprietor, of a business providing a full line of clothing.
