Hugh Riley, the "Gentleman"
The focus of this genealogical record will be the descendants of Hugh Riley, son of Miles. Hugh is the direct descendant of the Alabama Riley's. Hugh was born in 1652. He married Margaret Plummer, daughter of Thomas Plummer of Ann Arundle County, Maryland. Hugh and Margaret settled in Calvert County, Maryland, which became Prince George's County. Records indicate six children. Hugh is on record on May 1, 1668 as owning land in the area of what is now Washington, D.C. There is reference to this land being near the Duddington Manor Plantation, a landmark of then Bowie, Maryland. At one time, Hugh owned 5365 acres of land in the Prince George's county area. One such tract named Hogyard, or sometimes referred to as Hopyard. This tract is located in what is now Washington, D.C. The tract, present day, is approximately five blocks east of the Capital of the United States. Hugh sold this tract to a London businessman. Shortly afterwards, Hugh's son, Eliphaz, repurchased the tract. I referred to Hugh as "gentleman" because that is what he listed as his occupation on the land list for Maryland settlers during 1701 to 1730. Previous to this, he listed himself as farmer. I guess when you have 5365 acres of land you can afford to become a "gentleman." Hugh died in 1738. Most of Hugh Sr.'s children settled in the Prince George's area. Eliphaz remained in Prince George's and Montgomery counties. Soloman may have accompanied his nephews to North Carolina. Records are conflicting as to his history. It is thought that Soloman may have been a nickname for Samuel. The brothers have the same birth year. They could also have been twins. I find different death dates for each. Jane Lydia married Thomas Swearingen and settled in Berkley, VA. Her children would later go on to West Virginia. Eliphaz is the ancestor of the Alabama Riley's.

And, over the years in his lifetime, he acquired the skills necessary and sufficient wealth to enable him to become a successful land speculator. Commencing about 1688 according to records available, he began to acquire numerous tracts of land by Patents or deeds. In Colonial times,
Maryland law required a person who bought or leased a tract of land to give it a name. Consequently, in every instance of a Patent or deed, one will find the name of the tract mentioned in the record. Some of the many tracts owned by Hugh Riley, just to name a few, were "Riley's Folly," "Ryley's Range," Labor," "Hogyard," "Poplar Thicket," "Green Spring," and etc. An index of the many land transactions entered into by him in the form of patents or indentures ~deeds) and selected extracts of those recorded documents can be found in Appendix D.
