Donald Perry Allen was born on June 12, 1920, to Clara Lyttle Allen and Perry B. Allen, whose families were pioneers of Napa. He passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo on Nov. 17, 2006. He went to Napa's Lincoln School, Intermediate School, and graduated from Napa High School in 1939.

He met Joan Mohr while ice skating at the Santa Rosa Ice Rink. They married in 1942, and had three children: Patty, Perry and Carol. Don joined the Navy in 1945. After his military service, he got his pilot's license and enjoyed flying small planes. He worked as a sheet metal worker for Bell Products of Napa and was a member of the Union for Sheet Metal Workers.

With his wife, Joan and family, he spent many hours at the coast getting clams, crab and surf fish. After their children were grown, Don brought a fishing boat and spent many hours on the Napa River and the Bay. Don also loved camping, hunting with his friends in Ukiah and with his family at his parents' ranch at the top of Mt. George. He and his wife spent time traveling back roads and camping in their motor home.

As much as Don loved sports, he loved his family more and took pride in what they do. Don was an old-fashioned, modest man who will be missed by the family who loved him so much.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Gocher Mohr Allen of Napa; his children, Patricia Johnson and her husband John of Napa, Perry Allen and his wife Carole of Medford, Ore., Carol Horvath and her husband George of Napa; and his brother, Lewis Allen and his wife Barbara of Napa. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two nieces, two nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Derek Horvath.

At Don's request, the family had private graveside services at Tulocay Cemetery under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa. You may sign an online register book and leave your condolences for the family at www.rpfsc.com.
