Born in Whitburn, Midlothian, Scotland he was the son of James Murray and Mary Stewart.
He and his wife Jane Smith Murray along with their two eldest sons, immigrated to Ontario Canada in 1870. He was a printer by trade and owned a successful printing Co. James Murray & Co.
