Former Ellis County Sheriff Joseph Doerfler, 88, a resident of the Hays Good Samaritan Center, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, at St. Anthony Hospital.

He was born April 2, 1894 at Munjor, the son of Phillip and Theresa Hauser Doerfler.

He married Agnes Staab; she died Dec. 2, 1972.

Survivors include four sons, Wilfred, Wooster, Ohio, Alfred, Ventura, Calif., Marvin, Trenton, Mich., and Harold, Hutchinson; seven daughters, Mrs. William (Lucille) Bieker Befort, Mrs. Eugene (Kathryn) Rohr, and Mrs. Richard (Annette) Seib, all of Hays, Mrs. Pete (Isabel) Gabel, Ellis, Mrs. Joe (Edna) Brown, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Sister M. Rachel, Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. E. N. (Mildred) Fitzgerald, Tujunga, Calif.; two half brothers, Jack Hertlein, Hays, Heinie Hertlein, Independence, Mo.; three half sisters, Mrs. Earl (Adeline) Wilkerson and Mrs. Eugene (Ida) Riedel, both of Hays, and Mrs. Josephine Lackey, Penrose, Colo.; 47 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.
