After arriving in the USA from Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland in 1860 with his family, Patrick left his home in Newark, NJ in 1861 at the age of 16 to serve as a Private with the 2nd NJ Volunteers, Company C, 2nd Regiment. He mustered in at Trenton, NJ on May 27, 1861 under Colonel George W. McLean, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac M. Tucker and Major Samuel L. Buck. In late May of 1862, during the Siege of Yorktown, Patrick became seriously ill and spent many months at the US Naval Academy Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. After discharge from the hospital he went on to fight in many battles, including one of the deadliest - the Battle of the Wilderness in Northern Virginia under the command of General Ulysses S. "Sam" Grant. Known as Grant's Overland Campaign in the spring of1864, The Battle of The Wilderness opened six weeks of nearly constant marching and fighting. The armies clashed at Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Totopotomy Creek, Cold Harbor, and Trevilian Station. Patrick also participated in the Siege of Petersburg, VA. Patrick mustered out of the 2nd Regiment in Newark, NJ on June 21, 1864 under the command of Colonel Samuel Buck and Major James Close. On September 29, 1869, Patrick was the Grand Marshal of the Newark, NJ parade for the laying of the Cornerstone of St. Michael's Hospital, the first hospital to open in Newark in the aftermath of the Civil War. The hospital is now St Michael's Medical Center and serves Essex County and surrounding counties. Patrick died on February 20, 1917 in Newark, NJ.
