Melvin Oliver Halsten-sgaard was born June 9, 1924, to Oluf and Mathilda Halstensgaard in rural Bejou. He was devoted and committed to helping his family operate the family farm.
In 1953, he married Mardell Marie Larson in Glyndon. The couple operated a family farm together in rural Bejou, where they had four children, Loretta, Steven, Sheila and Thomas.
In 1965, Melvin moved his family to Whittier, Calif., where he was employed by Hall’s Rentals and Redi-Mix until 1973, when they moved back to Minnesota.
Melvin and his family operated a second farm in Clitherall until 2003, when Melvin decided that it was time to retire.
Melvin and Mardell moved to Big Pine Lake near New York Mills where they spend their summers while wintering in Truth or Consequences, N.M.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Oluf and Mathilda Halstensgaard; a brother, John; a brother-in-law, Bernard Brahan; and younger siblings.
Melvin will be sadly missed by his wife Mardell; children, Loretta, Steven, Sheila (Jack) and Thomas (Sharon); grandchildren, Stacy (Chad), Jessica, Alexis, Jamie (Jill), Tiffani (Ryan), Brian, Chad (Tasha), Derek, Carrie, Courtney, Danielle, Candace and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Soffi, Carver, Ashlyn, Kaylee and Cheyenne; a sister, Selma (Sally) Brahan; two brothers, Leonard and Elmer; and a sister-in-law, Alma.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Nidaros Lutheran Church in rural Clitherall.
