CREEDE—Nellie Mae Wyley was born April 2, 1921 in Del Norte to Martin Luther and Margaret Breen Humberson and died on Aug. 29, 2014.

She graduated from Del Norte High School in 1932 and went on to get a degree in business in Waco, Texas. Upon returning to Monte Vista she went to work for Colorado Social Services.

While living in Monte Vista she met and married Bibs Wyley on Nov. 2, 1941. They planned their dream to build Cottonwood Cove at Wagon Wheel Gap. They began building in 1945 and operated their successful business for 32 years.

Nellie’s hobbies included quilting, sewing, cooking, crafts, painting and was an amazing artist. She enjoyed watching the Broncos and spending quality time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed doing church work with the Ladies Aid Society and loved being a mother.

She assumed her husband’s seat as Mineral County Commissioner when he passed away in 1978 and held that position for 11 ½ years. She was on the board of the Rio Grande Water Conservation District during that same time. She was a member of the Creede Repertory Theatre Board of Trustees and the Creede Community Church. She was a dedicated servant of Creede Ladies Aid Society for more than 50 years.

During Bibs & Nell’s years at Cottonwood Cove they impacted countless young people who came to work for them, many of whom remain close family friends. She was able to carry on that tradition in her community and church work throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kenneth Humberson; her beloved husband, Bibs, in 1978.

Nellie is survived by daughters, Kay Wyley of the family home; Gea Wyley of Creede and a son Ken (Cindy) Wyley; grandchildren B.R. (Kristen) Means; Lauri Jordan of Creede and Teresa Wyley of Canon City, Colo.; a great granddaughter Aryonna Means, Creede, step grandsons Zack (Teresa) Northup of Creede and Brent (Venissa) Northup of Pueblo West.

Services will be held on Sept. 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Creede Community Church.

She will be loved and missed by many. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Creede Ladies Aid Society, P.O. Box 126, Creede, CO 81130, Or in care of Strohmayer’s Funeral Home, 205 South Broadway, Monte Vista, CO, 81144.
