Marie grew to womanhood in Langhei township, attending schools there. She later attended the Glenwood Academy and the Red Wing Academy. She taught school for a few years and later operated an art studio in
Benson, giving instructions in painting.

Surviving are two sons, Noel and Marvin of Benson; two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Myrtice) Lien of Benson and Mrs. Milo (Evelyn) Ellingson of Morris, 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son, Marvin Bert, who died in infancy; two brothers, Rev. Gilman Lien and Mickael Lien; three sisters, Mrs. Edw. (Inga) Peterson, Mrs. Knut (Clara) Urke and Dena Lien.
