Joost and his family left New Amsterdam shortly after his third son was born in 1712, settling in Monmouth County on Cheesequake Creek. Later he would sail down to the Mullica River and settled in what is today Lower Bank, the second white settlement in South Jersey. He and his sons bought several thousand acres from Samuel Driver.
