Born in Trumansburg, New York, Hermann Biggs was educated at Cornell University and went on to become one of the world’s pioneers in bacteriology. As the first and longest-serving New York State Health Commissioner, Biggs established standards still followed by the New York Department of Health. Throughout his career Biggs was a professor at what is now New York University School of Medicine. A colleague of Louis Pasteur in France and Robert Koch in Germany, Hermann Biggs would later be knighted by King Alfonso XIII, of Spain for his contributions to preventative medicine.
