Murray was born in the "country" of SC and later moved with his family to Charleston. He married Martha Fickling when he was 18 and she was 16. He joined the Navy and later retired in Maryland and ran a barbershop. He and Martha returned to SC in 1986. Upon his wife's death in 1997, he moved to Maryland to live with his only child, his daughter. He later was moved to an assisted living facility, where he died. He had two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Towards the end of his life, his greatest joy was seeing his daughter and her family and eating chocolate chip cookies, which he referred to as "chips."
