William GARRETT was born in 1843 in Westboro, Jefferson Township, Clinton Co., OH to Henry GARRETT and Nancy M. JOHNS. He spent his life there until the Civil War. William joined the Union Army, Company E 47th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was shot just above the right eye, the ball traveling through the left eye destroying it. After the war he met and married Mary Ellen ANDREW, daughter of William ANDREW and Ruth GARNER, on 18 Sep 1867 in Clinton Co., OH. They had three children: Effie Viola GARRETT (Metsker), Charles LeRoy GARRETT, and William Orville Andrew GARRETT. In 1872, the family moved to Rock Creek, Butler Co., KS. He died 09 Jan 1875 in Douglass Township, Butler Co., KS, age about 32 years, from complications resulting from the loss of his eye during his Civil War service and pneumonia. William is buried in Douglass Cemetery, Douglass, Butler Co., KS.

The photo of William Garrett posted here would have been taken after the Civil War when his eye was shot out. He succumbed to an infection later as a result of the injury which nearly killed him originally when he was shot. The drawing of him is prior to his war wounds.
