Son of James Stille Abeel and Mary Powell (Seymour) Abeel, he was born in NY. He attended public schools in NY and began his business career with Corning and Co. in NY. He next went to PA where he was an operator in the oil fields, then to CO where he had some mining interests.


During the Civil War he helped raise the Fourth Regiment of Michigan Cavalry and served until he was wounded in action near Chickamauga in 1863.


In 1873 Abeel moved to Waco, TX where he went into the hardware business with his brother, Thomas P. Abeel,in 1890. From 1892 to 1900 he was a receiver for the Waco and

northwestern Railway. He also assisted in the organization of the First National Bank, Citizens National Bank, Bell Water Co., Waco Ice and Refrigerator Co., and Turner-Coffield Co.


He married Sarah Connor at Sherman; they were the parents of 3 sons. Abeel died at his home, The Castle, in Waco.


His home is a Waco landmark for it's unique design.

Abeel's Pre-War Residence: Dearborn MI; 27 years old.

 

Enlisted on 8/13/1862 as a Captain. On 8/28/1862 he mustered into "H" company, MI 4th Cavalry. He was discharged for disability on 7/9/1864.

 

He was listed as:

* POW 12/21/1862 Nashville, TN (Paroled)

* Exchanged 5/6/1863 (place not stated)

* Wounded 9/19/1863 Chickamauga, GA

 

Federal Pension Information:

He applied for a pension on 4/21/1865; application # 66,392. His Widow (Sarah C. Abeel) applied for a pension on 9/18/1922 from the state of TX, application # 1,194,980.
