Her father may have been a man named Rufus Woodard who married Patience after his first wife died, but this is far from certain. Nannie was married to her first husband Benjamin before Rufus was married to Patience, and Rufus and Patience did have children together. Nannie's first husband Benjamin Franklin Coley (born in 1884 and married on March 29, 1905 in Wilson County) was murdered in Eureka, North Carolina in 1912 at the age of 28. It's unknown where her first husband is buried. She later married Paul Clarence Moore, who was nearly 15 years younger than her.
She had 2 daughters and 2 sons with her first husband, one who was born after her first husband's death and named in his memory as Benjamin Franklin Jr. and another who drowned in 1924 named Leland. After her husband's death, she reportedly had to give her children up for adoption because she was considered unable to take proper care of them. The daughters lived with an aunt named Lillie Cook and her husband Ed, while the sons lived with an aunt named Bertie Bell and her husband Cleveland. Even after getting married to Paul, Nannie reportedly still was not allowed to regain custody of her children.
Benjamin Jr is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Farmville with his wife Lena, while Leland is buried at Stantonsburg Cemetery. There is a tombstone there for a "Lelon Coley" that has matching birth and death dates. One of Nannie's daughters had a son named Leland, supporting the idea that name on the tombstone is misspelled. Nannie's two daughters were Grace and Estelle, and both are buried at Stantonsburg Cemetery. Estelle is buried next to her husband Leroy Langston and her daughter Cleo. The daughter Grace is buried at Stantonsburg next to her husband Walter Bardin.
