Louise Urness, 88, Fargo, ND, formerly of Dahlen, ND, died Friday, August 22, 2014 at Edgewood Vista.

Louise Orvik was born December 17, 1925 in Melrose Township near Michigan, ND, the daughter of Goodwin and Vilda (Masters) Orvik. She attended country school and graduated from Michigan (ND) High School in 1943 where the class motto was, Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve and that is how Louise lived her life: learning and serving! She attended Mayville College where she received a teaching certificate. In 1944, while teaching in Dahlen, ND, she met the love of her life, Arnold Urness. Louise enjoyed telling the story of meeting Arnold when purchasing a loaf of Sweetheart bread from him in the local mercantile store. That led to a marriage proposal and a wedding on June 16, 1946 in Michigan, ND.

Louise and Arnold operated and owned the Dahlen Mercantile store for 49 years. Their employees were extended family and every customer was a friend! After Arnold's death on July 29, 1995 Louise continued with the business for a few years. In 2001 she moved from the small community that she loved to Fargo, ND, to be closer to family. She admirably tried to embrace the city life, but her heart remained back home in Dahlen! In September 2007, Louise moved to Edgewood Vista where she loved playing gin rummy and outings with family. She was the resident known to uplift her Edgewood caregivers with unending gratitude and appreciation.

Louise loved the Lord and often spoke of her many blessings. She was active in Dahlen Lutheran Church. She enjoyed all the Ladies Aid activities, often wrote poems and was master of ceremonies for wedding anniversaries. Family always came first. Her grandchildren adored her and she was infamous for her game of Hide the Thimble and telling them that they were The best kids in the USA! Even when her voice was weak in her final days she would whisper, I love you a bushel and a peck!

She will be deeply missed by her three children, eight grandchildren: Great-grandchildren: two sisters-in-law, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Louise was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arnold; her parents; her siblings, Verneil, Maynard, Robert, infant Verna, and infant Maynard Kenneth Orvik; grandson, Travis Nelson; brothers-in-law, Herman & Alton Urness; sisters-in-law, Ruth Urness, Bertha Urness & Kajsa Orvik.

Louise's Funeral service will be held at the Dahlen Lutheran Church, Dahlen, ND, on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Val Teppo and the scripture reader will be Lori Ternquist. The organist will be Marlys Hoverson and the soloists will be Mary Ralston and Terry Ellingson. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dahlen. The casketbearers will be Michael Orvik, Kent Orvik, Gregg Orvik, Rick Urness, Terry Ellingson, and Allen Ternquist. All of Louise's many friends are considered honorary casketbearers. Memorials are preferred to the Dahlen Lutheran Church.
