A retired longshoreman and resident and native of Port Allen, he died Sunday, March 2, 1997. He was 83. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Visiting at Hall's Mortuary, Port Allen, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at Christ Baptist Church 5 p.m. until religious services at 8 p.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Joseph. Dismissal at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment in Orange Grove Cemetery.
Survived by two sisters, Virginia B. Pollard , Port Allen, and Amelina B. Wright , Baton Rouge; nieces, including Patricia Byrd , Mildred Magee, Jackalyn Byrd and Connecticut Todd; nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by wife, Gladys Byrd ; mother and father, John and Felice Antoine Byrd ; five brothers, Arthur Sr., Johnny Sr., Nora Sr., Mathew Sr. and Earnest Byrd ; and five sisters, Florida B. Callahan, Connecticut B. Elliot, Beulah and Earmena Byrd and Angie Dixon. He was a member of Christ Baptist Church.
