Martin Carl Fluegel was born May 9, 1927, in Salem, South Dakota. He was the son of Fred W. and Alma (Gifford) Fluegel. He went to Salem High School

Corporal Fluegel was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea on February 4, 1951 and died while a prisoner on July 24, 1951. Corporal Fluegel was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
