Christine was born Dec. 23, 1912, on the Starnes Family Farm in Union County, NC, to Devester and Wilma Starnes Brooks.

She was a student at Winchester Avenue High School (Monroe, NC). Later she graduated from Winston-Salem State Teachers College's Normal School and received her Bachelor's Degree from Johnson C. Smith University (College at the time). Furthering her education, she received her Master's in Early Childhood Education from New York University.

She was twice widowed. First married to John W. Brown, III, former Principal of Western Union High School (all grades) in Union County, NC. They had one son, John W. Brown, IV, who would follow in his parents' footsteps of being educators.

In 1984 she married Thebaud Jeffers, former Mayor of Gastonia, NC.

She retired from teaching after 44 years. She taught at Waxhaw Elementary, Winchester Avenue, Western Union High School, Mineral Springs and Western Union Elementary (it became an elementary school around the 1968-69 school year).

She was a member of several Teacher's Organizations including the Classroom Teachers Association (CTA).
She was noted as being the first Head Start Director in Union County, NC.

An active participant in a number of organizations, she was a member of The Modernettes of Monroe and the Alpha Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was recognized for her outstanding service in the latter.

Highly creative, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, and other needle arts; playing the piano and gardening as well.

Civic minded, she belonged to the Urban League Guild, The North Monroe Neighborhood Community Organization, The Union County Democratic Women and many more.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her son, John W. Brown, IV; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Brooks Perry (Monroe, NC) and Mrs. Wilma Vemelle Dade of Washington, D.C.; one niece, Wilma R. Little; one nephew, Theodore A. Little; and several cousins, many friends and students.

Long & Son Mortuary Service was in charge of her arrangements. The funeral was held at her church, Mt. Calvary AME Zion of Monroe, NC.
