VICE, HELEN - wife, mother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and of course friend to many, joined her husband, Keith, Saturday, August 16, 2014, in heaven. Helen, a native of Lexington, KY, was 94. She was instrumental in helping protect our troops during WWII while working in a parachute factory. She told with pride how she would sew a key part of the top of the parachute that would properly deploy the whole parachute. She showed promise as a leader when as a teenager she was given primary responsibility for the children's department in a department store in Lexington. She and Keith became engaged the night of Pearl Harbor and were married less than a year later. Her travels took her first to Washington DC, where for many years she was a leader in the Woman's Missionary Union in several Baptist churches. In the 70's, when Keith served our government as the Acting Agricultural Attaché to the American Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, she was active in the International Baptist Church of Brussels. Later, when Keith and she returned to the Washington DC area, they became key members at the Knollwood Baptist Mission in Burke, VA, sponsored by their parent church at First Springfield Baptist. The church eventually blossomed into a fully functioning independent body. After Keith retired they moved to Knoxville to be near their daughter Donna Yates, her husband Ron and of course Helen's grandchildren Tamara and Samuel. They fell in love with the community and became active in the Parkway Baptist Church where she is much loved. She would later often say that the "happiest years of her life" were spent in Knoxville. She is survived by her daughters LaVonna (Robert) Johnson, Donna (Ron) Yates, and son Dale (Susan) Vice. Her surviving brother and sister are Jean Covington and Ray (Charlotte) Singer, the widow of her twin brother, Nelson. Her surviving family on Keith's side include sisters-in-law Jewell (James Gale) Smith, and Joyce Jones. Her surviving grandchildren in addition to Tamara and Samuel Yates are Bryan (Monica) Johnson, who provided a great grandson, William, and Holly (Don) McCullough who provided her three great grandchildren, Chase, Wyatt, and Haydon. A celebration of Helen's life will be held 6:30 pm Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Rev. Lindy Apon officiating. Family and friends will meet on Friday at 1:30pm for Helen's committal service at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, Lyons View Pike. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4:30 - 6:30 pm at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
