Alvin W. Betow, 51, manager of the feed division of the Farmers Co-op Creamery of Sauk Centre, died July 12th at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anthony H. Petermeier in Melrose.
He was born October 17, 1915 in Getty township in Stearns county son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Betow. He was baptized on October 31, 1915 and confirmed on April 21, 1930 by Rev J. Schumacher.
He entered the Army in October, 1941. Four years in this branch of the service included a year of overseas duty in the European Theater of operations. France, Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg were the countries in which he fought with the 9th Armored Division. The Battle of the Bulge and the Ruhr Valley were experiences that earned him three battle stars. He was also called upon during this time to act as German interpreter for his battalion. Honorably discharged from the service in the later part of 1945 he returned to Sauk Centre.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters and is survived by two brothers, two sisters: Mrs. Martin (Elsie) Fritzlar of Belgrade; Leonard of New Prague; Arthur of Melrose; and Mrs. Anthony (Ella) Petermeier; four nieces and four nephews.
Military funeral services were held Saturday, July 15 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Sauk Centre with Rev. George Eschenbacher officiating with burial in the Greenwood cemetery.
