Maria was born in what was then Althütte Bukovina per church record books.

Tradition has it that Mary died at sea but her parents waited until arrival to let authorities know she had died on the journey over from Austria to the United States. They did not want her buried at sea. Possibly had infection from a cat scratch received prior to leaving for the United States. As told to Sharon Geist by her grandmother, Theresa (Augustine) Weber, sister of Mary.
