David was first married to Amelia O'Neal, on Sepember 12, 1844, in Brown County, Illinois. They had two children, Sarah and David.

After Amelia's death, David married Nancy Connelly, on September 4, 1850, in Wapello County. They were shown in the 1850 Census for Ripley, Brown County, Illinois with David's two children by his first marriage, Sarah, age 4, and David C. Lanning, age 3.

David and Nancy had two children, Hugh and Martha, and in the 1856 Census for Wapello County, David and Nancy were living in Agency, Iowa, with three children: Sarah A., age 3; Hugh, age 3; and Marth, with no age. Sarah's age would have actually been 10 by then, not 3.

David married Harriet Walling on December 3, 1862, in Wapello County, Iowa. Harriet's maiden name was Criswell, and she had been married to Garrett Walling, who she married on December 24, 1858.

David and Harriet had three children, Ella, James, and William.

David married L.C. Royce on December 29, 1880, in Wapello County, and he married Sarah Wertz on July 15, 1886, in Wapello County.
