OBITUARY

THE HOOSIER STATE (Newport IN)

Wednesday, Jan 2 1907

Mrs. Barbara Mack, who was born at Highland, six miles south of here, September 3, 1826, and where she resided until March 9, 1880, when she moved to Perrysville, and died at that place on the 23rd of December, 1906 aged past 80 years. Her funeral occurred on Christmas day from the U. B. church, Rev. H. A. McBride, the pastor, preaching the discourse. She is survived by a daughter, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

HUSBANDS

In an 1888 biographical sketch of her brother Gilbert, she is referred to as "Barbara, widow of Horace Brown". Daughter Lydia's 1886 marriage application named her parents as William Mack & Barbara Brown. So, it would appear that Barbara was married at least twice—to William Mack and Horace Brown.

U.S. Federal Census reports show Barbara with the "Mack" surname in 1860, 1880 and 1900, and with the "Brown" surname in 1870.

Three possibly relevant Indiana marriage records have been found to date:

  • May 10 1843 → Barbary Mack to Calvin Harris (Vermillion Co. IN)

  • Jul./Aug. 24 1847 → Barbary Harris to David S. Baker (Vigo Do. IN)

  • Oct. 23 1850 → Barbary Baker to Horace Brown (Vermillion Co. IN)

"Barbary Brown" is how her name appeared in the 1870 Census, living in the home of her father Wareham Mack.

Additional records would be helpful to figure out her life story.

MOTHER OF 4

Barbara was the "mother of 4, with 1 still living" in the 1900 Census.
