Jefferson "Davis" Hughes was the son of Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hughes, Jr. and Ruth Elmine Snider 1839-1867. Davis was only 6 years old when he lost his mother. Ruth Elmine Snider is presumed to be buried at Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery as she was in the Cherokee County Census of 1860. She gave birth to Sara 1859, Davis in 1861 and Laura 1865. All her children were born in Cherokee County, N.C. At the time of her death in 1867 the Hughes family members were all buried at Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery and there are several unmarked & deteriorated graves around the Hughes family members from that time.

Davis Hughes lived across from The Hughes Gristmill. He continued to work at the mill assisting & training other owners & operators even after his father Andrew Jack Hughes sold the mill.
