Military: Andrew was enlisted, by Capt. W.C. Kinney, on August 29, 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky for a term of three years service. He was mustered in, as a Pvt., on the same day. The 5th Regt. was assigned to garrison and picket duty, but also participated in skirmishes and battles in Kentucky and Virginia. After the end of the war, the men of the 5th were ordered to Arkansas to quash activities by white supremicist organizations which were attempting to disrupt free elections and intimidate newly-elected officeholders. Pvt. Rucker was mustered out on March 20, 1866 in Helena, Arkansas. He returned to Clark County, Kentucky.
Personal Life: Andrew was the son of George R. Rucker. He married Mary Frances Scott on August 5, 1871 in Clark County, Kentucky. The couple were the parents of Cassa, Mary Margaret, Henry B., Nora A., Dovie C., Vernon, Jonas D. and Strother H. Rucker. Mr. Rucker earned his living by working as a farmer. He was also active in the community and was elected as a trustee of the Winchester United Brothers of Friendship Lodge.
His daughter's marriage announcement:
•Colored Column-Sam Bivian [sic Vivian] of near Pilot View and Dovie Rucker, colored, of Ruckerville, were married in Winchester on November 24th. The bride is the youngest daughter of Andy Rucker.
