Alice Josephine Cheney grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where her father was a doctor. She studied music at Yale. She was an accomplished pianist and it was this talent that led to her meeting her husband, Walter Ferris. He needed someone to accompany him while he sang, and Alice took the position. They married in 1910 and four children followed (Charlton, Jane, Stuart, and Geoffrey). Walter and Alice divorced ten years later, remarried in 1923, and divorced for a final time in 1930.
