The actual surname was Latoha. A schoolteacher thought the name was French and insisted that one of the children spell it "La Tocha". The rest of the family adopted that way of spelling the name.
He married Idella Podsoda at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Noble Street, in Chicago, on 4 Feb 1897.
In 1905 John and his family came to Michigan and settled amongst other Polish immigrant's at Lark's Lake, Michigan.
John and Idella bought an 80-acre farm from Andrew Koscienak. They had eight children.
John's burial is in the St Nicholas Cemetery at Lark's Lake, Michigan.
