A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York, September 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at an unstated location September 24 as a private with Co. D, 14th New York Infantry, then transferred to Co. A, 44th New York Infantry, to date June 24, 1863. During the assault on Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, during the battle of Gettysburg, he was shot in the right shoulder. Eventually transported twenty-five miles eastward to the military hospital in York, he there died from complications.
