Cornelius was the son of Thunnis Van Tassel and Sophia Jacobs. He was married to Elsie Brewer on January 30, 1776 in Rensselaer, New York. The couple had ten children: Thunnis Van Tassel, Leah Van Tassel, Henry Van Tassel, Jacob Van Tassel, Cornelius Van Tassel, Leah Rose, Rachael Van Tassel, Issac Van Tassel, and Stephen Van Tassel.
