Joseph Smith was born about 1629, in Hartford, Connecticut. He had his eldest daughter with Lydia Hewett on February 14, 1665 naming her after her mother. He lived during a period when people in colonial New England were subject to laws limiting what they could do on Sunday. He also lived in Connecticut during the Pequot War, when Puritans and the native Pequot's battled for control of the area. He passed away in January 1690 in his hometown at the age of 59 and was laid to rest there.
Some suggest that He is the son of Lt Samuel Smith of 1602, however if you look at his memorial 0ne will see that Joseph does not fit in the lineup of children born in that family. He is also not mentioned as being a child of Samuel & Elizabeth Smith. ie mem# 6651026
Addendum:
We now know for a genetic fact that William, Simon, Joseph, Benjamin and Edward were all sons of Rhode Island Christopher Smith and his wife, Alice Gibbes. Their other children as recorded in the baptism records were Christopher, Susannah, Samuel, and Mary. This information based on an article entitled, "William Shakespeare and the Christopher Smith Family" by Kathleen Kitty Smith and Christopher Child, American Ancestors Magazine, Vol 17 Iss. 1. Published by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, 2016.
