SS "Garmoyle" was a general cargo vessel, 1229 tons, which was on a voyage from Cork to Glasgow. It was torpedoed or hit a mine on 10 July 1917, when 14 miles SE of Mine Head, Co. Waterford. German Submarine U-57, was one of the most successful submarines during WW1, sinking 62 ships.
It is understood that all 19 on board died, and that only Roche's body was recovered.
It is likely that SS "Garmoyle" was defensively armed. One other on board, Laurence Roche, was also a member of the Royal Navy Reserve.
The Royal Navy provided a 4" gun and Gunners to Merchant Shipping during World War 1 in an effort to counteract the effects of German Submarines in the Irish Sea, and in the Western Approaches north and south of Britain. It is probable that Aher and Roche were Gunners.
