From the Holt County Sentinel-Sept. 24, 1886

"Again our city is in mourning and we are called upon to chronicle the death of our beloved townsman, George Carpenter, who departed this life at 7 o'clock this Tuesday morning. He leaves a wife and a 17 year old son at home. His daughter, Mrs. Jennie Lamb and her husband, of Illinois, have been here for several days."

From Holt County History-1882, Page 151:

George H. Carpenter is an extensive dealer in harness and Saddles. His grandfather, Sylvester G. Carpenter, was from New York, and was there married. Bishop Carpenter, the father the subject of this sketch, was also a native of the same state, and was to Miss Weddle, of New York, her parents being natives of England.

George H. Carpenter was born in Warren county, New York on Feb. 24, 1824. He was reared on a farm and was educated in the common schools of Warren county. In 1846, he emigrated to Carroll county, Illinois, where he was engaged in farming until the fall of 1876, except during the years of 1860-61, at which time was spent in the mining country of California.

In the fall of 1876, he came to Mound City, Mo., where he was occupied in the furniture business until Jan., 1881, when he began his present calling, in which he is meeting with great success. He is the representative business man in his line of trade in this city.

Mr. Carpenter has been twice married, first, on May 1, 1846, to Miss Minerva Balcom, a daughter of Uriah and Patience Balcom, who were natives of Vermont. Mrs. Carptenter was born in Warren county, New York, in the year of 1822, and died Jan. 1, 1868. They had four children, two of whom are now living, Augusta, and Jenevia.

He took for his second wife, Miss Alice A. Morey, a daughter of George and Charlotte Morey, both natives of New York. Mrs. Carpenter was born in Warren county, New York, on July 12, 1848. They have two children, only one of whom is now living, George W. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are members of the Presbyterian Church.
