His mother [Sarah] was Scotch, a native of Virginia, and a daughter of a wealthy slave owner. The marriage of his parents was an early-day romance, being an elopement. 'My mother's parents objected to her marrying a greasy mechanic and they never forgave her,' the son related in telling his family history.
