Phillipena was the wife of Henry Brandes (1806) both coming from Germany. They were settlers in Wisconsin before 1834. Children were Henry Brandes (1835) Married to Sara Jane Moore; George C (1837)married to Elizabeth Ann Grimesey; Harriet (1839)married to Philo Curley; Frederick Charles (1842) married to Helena Betts; Mary Elizabeth (1845) married to John Washington Ray; Charles D (1849) married to Addie Rider - She died giving birth to son-Willie. Baby would die three months later. They are buried together at Bridgeport. Charles then married Mary Jane Barrette. Phillipena's husband was a farmer and Fine Wood Craftsman -also a Councilman for many years in Crawford Co.. Per interview information from son - George C - At 15 yrs of age - He and Father - Henry,Sr. - set out for the California Gold Rush in 1851-1852 - leaving Phillipena to raise four minor children (Henry,Jr was 17)Phillipena is buried with daughter - Harriet Brandes Curley - surrounded by daughter-in-law - Addie Rider Brandes and infant grandson - Willie. Also by 10 yr old grandson - Charles - son of George and Ann Elizabeth Grimesey Brandes. Son Charles was but two years old when his father left. Henry was murdered by an Indian boy of 17yrs that worked for him in the mountains. He would put an AXE thru the back of Henry's head. The boy was tried, convicted and hanged! Henry was evidently buried near Kalmuth Falls, Oregon where he died. George remained in California as a cowboy, saddler, Indian fighter and then serving California in the Civil War.
