Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1973 to 1984), he played at the shortstop position with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Chicago Cubs. Born Thomas Martin Veryzer, he attended Islip High School in New York. He was selected by the Tigers during the 1st round of the 1971 Amateur Draft and marked his Major League debut with Detroit on August 14, 1973. He recorded a .300 batting average in 18 games-played that year. While with Cleveland in 1978, he produced a career-high 114 hits. On May 15, 1981, Veryzer was on the field when Len Barker yielded a perfect game. He made an exceptional defensive play which preserved the feat. His last game was played during the 1984 National League Championship Series. In 996 regular season games, he compiled 687 hits with a .241 lifetime batting average. He died of complications from a stroke.
