Annie Boland was an early member of Cumann na mBan, the Irish women's Republican organisation founded in 1914. She married senior Irish Republican Brotherhood member Gerald Boland in 1915.

She retired from the Cumann when she became pregnant with her first son, Enda James, who was born in 1916 when Gerald was detained in Knutsford Jail following the Easter Rising.

Their second son was born in 1917 after Gerald's release. Gerald was imprisoned again for most of 1918. The couple's first two daughters, Eileen (1920) and Máire (1922) were born while Gerard was active with the IRA during the Irish War of Independence.

Gerald was captured at the start of the Irish Civil War as he fought with Republican forces and detained until 1924. Their third son, Harry, was born in 1925.

Gerald became a founding member of Fianna Fáil in 1926 and the family's life became more settled. Two more children were born, Ciarán in 1928 and Nuala in 1930, before Gerald became member of the government in 1932.

Annie lived as a politician's wife and home-maker for 38 years until her death in 1970. She was survived by her husband Gerald and their seven children and numerous grandchildren.
