FORMER CITY EDUCATOR DIES

William Edward Morgan, 76, well known Idaho educator, died Saturday at his home in Boise following a heart attack. A teacher and school administrator for 40 years, Mr. Morgan was principal of Fielding Academy in Paris for three years, 1911 to 1914, and held the position of superintendent of Montpelier city schools for 13 years, 1920 to 1933. He was principal of the Montpelier L. D. S. stake seminary 1919-1920. After leaving Montpelier, he was superintendent of the Malta school, and following that was with the Idaho department of education for a number of years, conducting a survey of Idaho schools for a consolidation program. Before coming to Idaho he taught for a number of years in Utah.

Possessing a wide background in education, he attended the U. S. A. C. in Logan, received a B. A. degree from B. Y. U. in Provo and an M. A. from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He also took post graduate work toward a Ph.D. at the universities of Chicago, California and Minnesota. Following a year of graduate study at Berkeley, he was on the B. Y. U. faculty in 1915-1916, and was a teacher at Box Elder high school in Brigham City, 1916-1919.

During the late war he was employed at Gowen Field at Boise and for the past two years had been retired. At his various places of residence he was active in religious and civic affairs. While in Montpelier he was a member of the Rotary club. He served as an L. D. S. missionary in the southern states.

The son of the late Edward and Rachel Cole Morgan, he was born September 29, 1971 in Willard, Utah. In 1901, he married Marian E. Henderson, who preceded him in death in June, 1932. He and Jeanne Hanson of Montpelier were married in 1933.

Surviving are his widow, and three daughters from his first marriage, Mrs. Henry C. (Norma) Johnson, Richland, Washington; Mrs. O. C. (Lucy) Hammond, Ogden; Mrs. C. T. (Ruth) Quinney, Sacramento, California; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Mason, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Pauline Ramsey, Los Angeles; two brothers, Robert H. Morgan, Willard; Frank Morgan, Declo; and six grandchildren.

Services were held in the L. D. s. First ward chapel in Boise Monday evening, and at 12 p.m. Wednesday in the Montpelier First ward chapel. Bishop Royal D. Clark conducted the Montpelier services, and vocal selections were by Montpelier high school students under the direction of Wesley R. Baker. The M. H. S. choir sang, “A Legend,” and “Faith of Our Fathers,” a trio, comprised of Helen Williams, Grant Smart and Joyce Hooker sang “Oh, Lord Most Holy.” Speakers were Eldon Cook and President Sidney E. Burgoyne. The invocation was offered by Fred L. Cruikshank and Hyrum Oakey gave the benediction.

Interment was in the Montpelier cemetery, where the grave was dedicated by Wilson Peters. The Matthews Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
