George was the second of eight children born to his parents, Knute Gulliksen and Synneva Olsdatter (Borsheim) Lien/Lee. All four of George's grandparents were Norwegian immigrants. His original family surname was Lien. Norwegian and American church records consistently spelled the family surname as Lien, while census and civil records often used Lee or the patronymic name of Knudson. However, George's father and an uncle chose to use the shortened version, Lee, and that is the surname passed down to George and all his siblings.

In his 20s, George left home, venturing from Minnesota to Idaho, where he met and married his wife, Pearl Arena Brunton. They had one daughter, Mildred. By 1930, George, Pearl, and their daughter had moved to southern Califoria where they lived out their lives. George had a long career as a house plasterer/painter. He passed away at age 58.
