Not long after his 10th birthday his father's declining health prompted the family to relocate from Paducah to Hadensville, Todd County. They made the near 100 mile journey by wagon.
Loyal took sick just six months after his 12th birthday. Less than nine days later he was dead. His doctor said "typhoid fever with perforation of intestines" was the cause.
Loyal was buried in Hermon Cemetery, Elkton. His father, who died in 1917, and his cousin Flossie Bearden, who died in 1921, are buried there as well.
