PRAIRIE DU SAC - DeWayne Harold Askey, age 85, of Prairie du Sac, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014, in the comfort of his lake house with his family members at his side. The sky turned and out came a bright and beautiful double rainbow, appearing to us that Mom was bringing Pop to his eternal home. When affected by recent medical issues, he was asked why he wanted to live, his inspiring response was "I love so many people, and they love me", which defines DeWayne. His heart was pure and it emanated to everyone. He was born on Oct. 12, 1928, in Madison, Wis., to Roy H. and Grace D. (Hopkins) Askey and moved to Sauk Prairie in 1968. He was married on Aug. 26, 1956, to Nedra Del Fink of Monona.

DeWayne lived a great life and enjoyed every day. He received awards from his employer, Oscar Mayer, for never having called in sick a day in his life. DeWayne was an aircraft mechanic for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, stationed at Truax, and loved working on and flying aircraft at a Monona area airport in that timeframe. His youthful days were spent racing boats and riding horses, which is how he met Nedra. The grandchild of a pastor, DeWayne and his wife, Nedra, helped start a Baptist church in Madison and Monona and acted as a Deacon. His personal ministry was to serve his children and grandchildren, always there for them and an incredible listener. Together, DeWayne and Nedra maintained a recreational property on "Happy Hill" having treasured times with family and friends. He considered Bryce Lauer family after he lost his father as a boy.

He loved being a grandfather and participating in the lives of his grandchildren, Nicholas and Michael (Steve), Jimmie and Jennifer (David and Marie), Sierra and Mitchel (Kelsey) (Marianne and Brian Gilbertson of Spring Green). DeWayne participated in a coffee clutch we warmly referred to as "The Young Guys" to reflect their spirit and not age, which gave him years of joy, laughter, and love from his dear friends there. The Askey family would like to extend the most sincere thanks to Mark and Lana Ballweg, who provided support in so many ways that it is beyond description except for the word love.

DeWayne was preceded in death by his true love and wife of 50 years, Nedra Askey; parents, Roy Harold and Grace D. (Hopkins) Askey; siblings, Edward "Bud" (Jane) Askey, William "Bill" Askey and Glydina "Gly" (Joe) Ammons; and great-grandchild, Sophie (Michael).

Survivors other than his children and grandchildren include his sister-in-law, Gayle Lyke; brother-in-law, Joe Ammons; great-grandchildren, Paige and Alexi (Sierra and Dave Stafford), Gigi (Jimmie and Kristin Rivera), and Lola Marie (Jennifer and Jed Smith); and nephews and nieces, Terry Askey and Darleen (Dennis) Michaelis, Nancy Malero and Mike (Leslie) Ammons, Scott and Mark Askey, Greg Lyke and Maren (Erik) Swenson.
